DJBOX · Live VJ

Play it live with a controller

Pair an Xbox controller over Bluetooth and a VJ can play effects live on top of any visual mode. Effects stack, so a kaleidoscope, a glitch and a colour shift can run together. Every button, trigger and stick can be remapped on the touch screen (MAPPING tab), and five presets cover common styles.

MAPPING Every button, trigger and stick on the controller, remapped on the touch screen. Here the VJ FX preset, choosing what the left trigger does.

Buttons: tap, hold or toggle

A tap button fires once, usually on the next beat (HIT, ZOOM PUNCH, GLITCH). A hold button is on only while you hold it (CUT blackout, FREEZE, STUTTER). A toggle button latches on and off with one press (KALEIDO, THERMAL, STROBE (SAFE)). Some buttons run a show command instead, such as the next mode or the next DJ name.

Triggers: pressure

LT and RT report how far they are pulled, so you set the strength. ZOOM reaches up to 1.8 times, KALEIDO N picks 3 to 12 segments, PIXELATE changes pixel size, and ROLL loops the last beat, then 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 beat as you press deeper.

Sticks: analog x and y

How far you push sets the amount and the direction sets where. STEER moves the camera, ZOOM + ROTATE zooms with y and rotates up to 45 degrees with x, KALEIDO CENTRE or RIPPLE ORIGIN place the effect where you point, and TWITCH aims montage-style jolts in the stick's direction, harder the further you push. The stick springs back to centre on release.

Effects stacked, live

NO EFFECTS CITY with the Libruh plate, nothing pressed.
+ 2 TRIGGERS Both triggers half pulled: NEON EDGES and WARP SPEED.
+ KALEIDO X latches KALEIDO on top of both triggers.
+ CRT D-pad up latches the CRT look: four effects at once, the name still clear.
Effects

All 84 effects, and how each one plays

Not every effect works the same way. 42 of them read how far a trigger is pulled or a stick is pushed, so the VJ plays them like an instrument instead of a switch. 18 controls can be remapped on the touch screen.

Crossfader

The two triggers can be paired. As an FX crossfader, LT's effect and RT's effect blend like a DJ fader, with a smooth or sharp curve. As a mode crossfader, LT pulls toward one chosen mode and RT toward another; hold a full pull and it lands there.

Kept safe

Every fast brightness change follows a flash limit (at most 0.30 of the frame average and 3 times a second), and the director's flash guard has the last word.

Always available

The Xbox button turns every effect off (PANIC) and can't be remapped. The VIEW button toggles the debug panels, or opens settings when held for 2 seconds.
